Apollo's Arrow: The Profound and Enduring Impact of Coronavirus on the Way We Live Customer Reviews
:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- What enduring impact? False advertising. : This book was well written but the promise of offering a story on how the pandemic will affect our future was never part of the narrative offered in this book. If you've been paying attention all year, reading daily newspapers, following public health on social media, there is absolutely nothing new to learn from this book, nothing. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ryan Boissonneault -- A detailed account of all aspects of COVID-19 : The COVID-19 pandemic is arguably the most important and disruptive global event—in terms of impact on health, the political economy, and culture—of the twenty-first century. Understanding the details and full complexity of the pandemic, therefore, is a necessity for understanding the current state of the US and the world. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from D. MACDONALD -- Very informative and easy to read : I read a snippet in a WSJ column several weeks ago and was so intrigued I pre-ordered the book. Well worth the time and money. The author places the current pandemic in historical perspective, examines our human responses to a rapidly changing environment and lays out sensible arguments for what will and may lie ahead. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Pastor V -- A Trusted and Engaging Writer : My scientist son and I are each reading this. We both loved "Blueprint" and were delighted to find this new book hot off the presses! I may be quarantined in a nursing home, but my brain still works! And I want to keep informed as to what is going on out there and what this means for the future-mine and everyone else's. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2020 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Avid reader -- Not comprehensive. : Like so many experts who are publishing about the COVID-19 virus and the response to it this author overlooks the very real cost of the draconic measures that were taken in America, and globally and focuses instead on data provided by the people who introduced those measures. The number of deaths from COVID-19 has not been, and probably cannot be, calculated cleanly. In some states COVID was required to be recorded as cause of death for persons who were positive for the virus even if they were asymptomatic and got hit by a bus. Early deaths were most likely undercounted because no one was looking for it. This author does not look at month-to-month, year over year excessive death statistics which give a more clear picture of deaths directly from COVID as well as the deaths caused by the response to the virus (e.g. increased suicide rates related to isolation). There is also a lack of consideration of other consequences of lockdown such as increased depression, loss of jobs and income, children receiving substandard education and losing social outlets. If you ascribe to the view that the government and media know what is best you will find this book bolsters that opinion but it gives only one side of the picture which is then used to justify the continued imposition of restrictions. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gloria -- A fantastic read : A fantastic read. Just finished chapter 2. Cannot stop reading and making notes. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2020 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Colleen K. -- I've never read a book where I remembered so little upon finishing it. Is that good or bad? : I don't think I've ever read a book where I remembered so little upon finishing it. It makes reviewing this book a unique challenge. I learned little from this book because I have already spent hundreds of hours over the last year reading about the coronavirus and history of pandemics from various sources. There has to be value in condensing that all into one location. The fact that nothing stood out as outrageous or false is surely to be lauded. On the other hand the value of this book is sure to drop significantly over time. There are a lot of unanswered questions today that will be better addressed in the future when the picture is clear and more data can be analyzed. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from @BobbyGvegas -- Expansive coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic, the histories of plagues, & the broader implications : This book was a joy to read. I have followed SARS-2 developments closely since they first hit the public health / epidemiological news nearly a year ago (retired health care analyst). This book confirms what I already knew, and sets forth valuable broader context (e.g., the historical stuff regarding recurrent plagues), particularly as they go to policy considerations going forward. Highly recommended. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mr. Trevor J. Twohig -- An interesting and grounding take on where we are. : Christakis bases a lot of his opinion on the flu pandemic on 1918. This is a book heavily founded on research and comes from an American perspective. I am left feeling absolutely delighted I was not born across the pond. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Hemingway -- Great book : An interesting and logical and realistic view of the pandemic. The book relates to historic pandemics and importantly to human behaviour. Great reading a must for those interested in science and human behaviour. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 6, 2021 )

Recomendo. ( Reviewed in Brazil on December 27, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sergio Marmen -- Informative, Enjoyable : Full of info that I didn't know even after a year of pandemic. I'm not a scientist in a related field, I'm an average guy. This book was insanely informative! Walking through the first few cases, how some spread widely and others didn't. What we understand and what we still didn't as of Aug 2020 (and still don't today). Just the first 3 chapters was worth the purchase to me. ( Reviewed in Canada on April 3, 2021 )
